Triops longicaudatus, also known as the American triops or American shield crab, is a fascinating gill-footed crustacean. This species is among the oldest living animal species, having existed for millions of years on Earth. The name "Triops" means "three-eyed," as these crustaceans possess an additional nauplius eye alongside their compound eyes.
Appearance and Size
Triops longicaudatus is characterized by a flat, shield-shaped carapace. The black variant can reach a total length of up to 8 cm, with a significant portion attributed to its distinctive long tail. The coloration of this variant starts off slightly black and becomes more intense with age. Triops are among the oldest living species in the world and are often referred to as "living fossils," as their form has changed little over millions of years. These prehistoric gill-footed crustaceans provide a unique insight into evolution.
Habitat and Behavior
Triops inhabit temporary waters that form after rainfalls or floods. They are well adapted to these dynamic habitats and prefer temperatures of 24 to 26 °C. Triops longicaudatus are relatively active and enjoy swimming around in the aquarium.

1. Optimal Water Quality
Water quality is a crucial factor for successful Triops breeding. Mix 75 % distilled water with 25 % mineral-rich water. Additionally, aim for a slightly acidic pH value between 6 and 8. For extra microorganisms to enrich the ecosystem, you can add a small amount of clean stream or rainwater. Avoid tap water, as it may contain harmful substances like chlorine, which can be detrimental to newly hatched Triops.
2. Ideal Water Temperature
Water temperature directly impacts the development and well-being of Triops. For hatching, the temperature should be around 25 °C (77 °F). Temperatures below 20 °C (68 °F) or above 30 °C (86 °F) can negatively affect hatching rates and growth. Use a heater to maintain a stable temperature and check it daily with a thermometer.
