Product Description and Contents
- Triops Eggs
Choose between 100, 200, or 300 Triops eggs, carefully hand-counted and separated from sand. We guarantee a hatching rate of 10–50 Triops per 100 eggs to ensure you get the best start in breeding.
- Organic Algae Powder and Rearing Food
This food supports the Triops during the first two weeks of rearing. Afterward, we recommend our ecological main food to continue feeding the Triops in a species-appropriate way.
- Floating Ring
The included floating ring prevents the Triops eggs from sticking to the edge of the hatching tank. This significantly increases the hatching rate.

Use the QR code to access a detailed expert-written guide. It ensures species-appropriate care and is suitable for both beginners and advanced breeders.
- Note:
This Triops variant is also available as a Triops breeding kit with a rearing tank, aquarium, and accessories. For beginners, a larger number of Triops eggs is recommended, while experienced breeders can achieve good results with fewer eggs.

Description
Triops longicaudatus, also known as the American prehistoric crab or American shield crab, is a fascinating gill-footed crustacean. This species is among the oldest living animal species, having existed for millions of years on Earth. The name "Triops" means "three-eyed," as these crustaceans possess an additional nauplius eye alongside their compound eyes.
Appearance and Size
Triops longicaudatus is characterized by a flat, shield-shaped carapace. The long variant ("long") can reach a total length of up to 10 cm, with a significant portion attributed to its distinctive long tail. Triops are among the oldest living species in the world and are often referred to as "living fossils," as their form has changed little over millions of years. These prehistoric gill-footed crustaceans provide a unique insight into evolution.
Habitat and Behavior
Triops inhabit temporary waters that form after rainfalls or floods. They are well adapted to these dynamic habitats and prefer temperatures of 24 to 26 °C. Triops longicaudatus is relatively active and enjoys swimming around in the aquarium.
Reproduction
The reproduction of Triops longicaudatus is variable and can include parthenogenesis, hermaphroditism, or sexual reproduction. The long variant ("long") reproduces exclusively through sexual reproduction, producing resilient dormant eggs (cysts) that can survive long periods of drought. They reach sexual maturity after about 14 days.
Care Tips
For aquarium care, a tank of at least 20 liters with fine sand substrate is recommended. The water temperature should be kept constant between 24 and 26 °C. Initially, algae powder and rearing food are suitable, while later, main food and vegetables such as carrots, bell peppers, and cucumbers can be provided. Occasionally, animal food such as red mosquito larvae can also be fed.
Special Features
Triops longicaudatus is a particularly easy-to-care-for species that is excellent for children and beginners in aquaristics. The long variant ("long") is known for its robustness and ease of care. The antennae of this variant are significantly longer than those of other Triops longicaudatus, with males also having a longer body than females.

Key Factors for a High Triops Hatching Rate
1. Optimal Water Quality
Water quality is a crucial factor for successful Triops breeding. Mix 75 % distilled water with 25 % mineral-rich water. Additionally, aim for a slightly acidic pH value between 6 and 8. For extra microorganisms to enrich the ecosystem, you can add a small amount of clean stream or rainwater. Avoid tap water, as it may contain harmful substances like chlorine, which can be detrimental to newly hatched Triops.
2. Ideal Water Temperature
Water temperature directly impacts the development and well-being of Triops. For hatching, the temperature should be around 25 °C (77 °F). Temperatures below 20 °C (68 °F) or above 30 °C (86 °F) can negatively affect hatching rates and growth. Use a heater to maintain a stable temperature and check it daily with a thermometer.
3. Sufficient Sunlight
Light is essential for the hatching and growth of Triops. Place the rearing tank in a bright location without direct sunlight to avoid excessive algae growth. Suitable aquatic plants like moss balls and hornwort can produce oxygen with the help of sunlight. These plants also enrich the tank by providing food and microorganisms, naturally supporting the rearing system...Read the complete instructions here
