Product Description and Contents

  • Lepidurus Eggs
Choose between 100, 200, or 300 Lepidurus eggs, which are carefully hand-counted and separated from the sand. We guarantee a hatching rate of 10–50 animals per 100 eggs to give you the best possible start in breeding.

  • Organic Algae Powder and Rearing Food
This food supports Lepidurus in the first two weeks of breeding. Afterward, we recommend our organic main food to continue feeding the animals in an appropriate way.

  • Floating Ring
The included floating ring prevents Lepidurus eggs from sticking to the edge of the breeding tank, significantly increasing the hatching rate.

  • Instructions via QR Code
With the included QR code, you'll receive a detailed expert guide. It guarantees species-appropriate care and is suitable for both beginners and advanced breeders.

  • Note
Lepidurus apus is currently not for sale due to its endangered status on the Red List, and this product page serves as an informational page.

Description
Lepidurus apus, also known as the European Spring Tadpole Shrimp, is a fascinating gill-footed crustacean. This species is one of the oldest living animal species, having existed for millions of years on Earth. Unlike Triops, Lepidurus has a well-defined abdominal plate on its abdomen.

Appearance and Size
Lepidurus apus is characterized by a voluminous carapace and a short tail. The species can reach a body length of up to 10 centimeters. These animals are among the oldest living species in the world and are often referred to as "living fossils," as their form has changed little over millions of years. These prehistoric gill-footed crustaceans provide a unique insight into evolution.

Habitat and Behavior
Lepidurus inhabit temporary waters that form after rainfalls or floods. They prefer cool temperatures of about 10 to 15 °C. They are not very active and mainly move along the bottom substrate.

Reproduction
Lepidurus apus reproduces exclusively through sexual reproduction. Females produce resilient dormant eggs (cysts) that can survive for years in the ground. They reach sexual maturity after about 30 days.

Care Tips
For aquarium care, a tank of at least 20 liters with fine sand substrate is recommended. The water temperature should be kept constant between 10 and 15 °C. Initially, algae powder and rearing food are suitable, while later, main food and vegetables such as carrots, bell peppers, and cucumbers can be provided. Occasionally, animal food such as red mosquito larvae can also be fed.

Special Features
Lepidurus apus is a more demanding species that is currently not offered due to its endangered status on the Red List. Breeding this species is relatively challenging due to its long hatching duration and growth phase.

Rearing Instructions

Key Factors for a High Triops Hatching Rate

1. Optimal Water Quality

Water quality is a crucial factor for successful Triops breeding. Mix 75 % distilled water with 25 % mineral-rich water. Additionally, aim for a slightly acidic pH value between 6 and 8. For extra microorganisms to enrich the ecosystem, you can add a small amount of clean stream or rainwater. Avoid tap water, as it may contain harmful substances like chlorine, which can be detrimental to newly hatched Triops.

2. Ideal Water Temperature

Water temperature directly impacts the development and well-being of Triops. For hatching, the temperature should be around 25 °C (77 °F). Temperatures below 20 °C (68 °F) or above 30 °C (86 °F) can negatively affect hatching rates and growth. Use a heater to maintain a stable temperature and check it daily with a thermometer.

3. Sufficient Sunlight

Light is essential for the hatching and growth of Triops. Place the rearing tank in a bright location without direct sunlight to avoid excessive algae growth. Suitable aquatic plants like moss balls and hornwort can produce oxygen with the help of sunlight. These plants also enrich the tank by providing food and microorganisms, naturally supporting the rearing system...Read the complete instructions here
