Product Description and Contents
- Streptocephalus Eggs
Choose between 100, 200, or 300 Streptocephalus eggs, individually hand-counted and carefully separated from sand. We guarantee a hatching rate of 10–50 animals per 100 eggs to give you the best possible start to your breeding efforts.
- Organic Algae Powder
This food supports the Streptocephalus during the first two weeks of their development. They are exclusively fed with algae powder during this phase.
- Floating Ring
The included floating ring prevents the eggs from sticking to the edges of the breeding tank, which significantly increases the hatching rate.

Profile
General Information
• Scientific Name: Streptocephalus
• Life Expectancy: Average 4-8 weeks
• Hatching Duration: 1-3 days
• Difficulty: Easy
• Size: Up to 2.5 cm (0.98 inches)
Description
Streptocephalus is a small representative of the fairy shrimp (Anostraca), living in temporary water bodies. These ancient crustaceans are fascinating due to their ability to survive extreme environmental conditions. Their dormant eggs allow them to endure long dry periods, ensuring the species' survival over centuries.
Appearance and Size
Streptocephalus has an elongated, transparent body with a reddish hue. The animals reach a maximum length of about 2.5 cm (0.98 inches). Males are recognizable by their distinctive, curved antennae used for mating. Females have a more robust body, as they carry the dormant eggs.
Habitat and Lifestyle
Streptocephalus prefers temporary water bodies that form after rainfall. These small water bodies are often nutrient-rich and free from predators such as fish. The animals are fast swimmers and feed by filtering small particles from the water.
Reproduction
Reproduction usually occurs sexually, with males holding the females with their antennae. The females lay dormant eggs, which are extremely resistant to drying, heat, and cold. After rehydration, the eggs develop into nauplii (larvae) within one to three days.
Care Tips
For aquarium care, a small tank with at least 5 liters (1.32 gallons) of volume is sufficient. Fine sand as substrate is ideal. A constant temperature of around 22-26 °C (71.6-78.8 °F) promotes the development of the animals. Suitable food includes algae powder, fine food for breeding crustaceans, and detritus.
Special Features
Streptocephalus is easy to care for and particularly suitable for children or beginners. The animals fascinate with their rapid development and captivating movement. Their ability to survive in extreme habitats makes them a unique example of adaptation and evolution.

.Key Factors for a High Triops Hatching Rate
1. Optimal Water Quality
Water quality is a crucial factor for successful Streptocephalus breeding. Mix 75 % distilled water with 25 % mineral-rich water. Additionally, aim for a slightly acidic pH value between 6 and 8. For extra microorganisms to enrich the ecosystem, you can add a small amount of clean stream or rainwater. Avoid tap water, as it may contain harmful substances like chlorine, which can be detrimental to newly hatched Triops.
2. Ideal Water Temperature
Water temperature directly impacts the development and well-being of Streptocephalus. For hatching, the temperature should be around 25 °C (77 °F). Temperatures below 20 °C (68 °F) or above 30 °C (86 °F) can negatively affect hatching rates and growth. Use a heater to maintain a stable temperature and check it daily with a thermometer.
3. Sufficient Sunlight
Light is essential for the hatching and growth of Streptocephalus. Place the rearing tank in a bright location without direct sunlight to avoid excessive algae growth. Suitable aquatic plants like moss balls and hornwort can produce oxygen with the help of sunlight. These plants also enrich the tank by providing food and microorganisms, naturally supporting the rearing system.
